Scholarships For Women Over 40 – Do They Exist

The question is are do scholarships for women over 40 exist, not do women over 40 exist…ha ha ha.

Yes there are scholarships for women over 40.

One of the scariest things I’ve done in my life is go back to college. I didn’t have enough money to pay for college and still had to provide for my kids. So yeah I was pretty scared.

I have been able to pay for most of my schooling with the help of grants and scholarships. I get pretty good grades now but when I started, my record was not good. So getting any sort of academic scholarship was out of the question. So I looked elsewhere.

There are actually a ton of scholarships given out each year with almost no special requirements. Burger King gives away many many $1000 scholarships to High School Juniors every year. So yeah there are lots of opportunities.

The key is knowing where to find them.

When I started out I simply went to the internet and started searching and found enough information to get started. FAFSA is a government website that lists all kinds of government grants and scholarships and is a great place to start. Most of my scholarship money has come from corporate scholarships such as the Burger King Scholarship I mentioned above. Discover Card is another one that gives away multiple generous scholarships every year. In fact various corporations are responsible for awarding hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarship money every year.

If you are currently employed, contact your human resource department and find out if they offer any sort of college assistance program. In fact, employers are another huge contributor of college assistance and should not be over looked.

Working Full Time and Still Need College Financial Aid?

Many students work full time, at least part of the year, and still do not have enough money to pay for college. This is especially true for “non traditional students” who return to college a number of years after high school graduation. In fact it is not uncommon to see older college students, in their 30’s to retirement age who are pursuing a first time degree. Many of these students have children to support, or at least did not have ample savings for college. So they find themselves working full time while taking college classes.

All college students should complete the FAFSA, as this is the one form that will qualify them for government grants and loans. Even if students work full time and are unsure if they will qualify for aid, students should still complete the form. Information about this application can be obtained from the college’s financial aid office or online.

The federal and state governments use the FAFSA to determine if students qualify for aid from the government. When students receive the report back they are notified if they will receive state or federal grants. Of course grants are the best option because they are gifts that do not have to be repaid. However students who work full time may have income amounts that are too high to qualify for grants.

Many students at even what some would consider high income levels will still qualify for government backed student loans. Stafford loans in subsidized and unsubsidized options may be available. These loans have a low interest rate that is determined by the federal government. Repayment on these types of loans begins six months after the student graduates from college. So these loans can be a great assistance for many students, even those who work.

Working students would be wise to only take out enough loans to bridge the gap between what they earn and what is needed for school. The type and amount of loan that a student qualifies for can be quite different from what a student should accept. For example, a student may qualify for a $8000 Stafford loan, but only really need $2000 to make up the difference in tuition costs for that year. Students may be tempted to take out the entire amount to use for “other expenses.” However all of this money must be repaid after graduation and students may find the monthly loan payment difficult to make if they have taken out too many loans during their college career.

College scholarships may be available even for working students. There are many scholarship programs that are specific to a degree or department. Students should ask in the departmental office of their major about such options.

When students investigate all of their financial aid options including grants, loans and scholarships, even students working full time can gain assistance to pay for educational expenses.

Online Degree Finance

Now that you have made the decision to finish your education through an online degree program, what’s next? Obviously researching and finding the right college is key. But once you have passed that step, there is one more major step that is over looked by many applicants of online schools. What is it you ask? Well it’s applying for financial aid, getting the right loan, or even obtaining grants.

So if you have found the college that you suits you, its now time to complete your free application for Federal Student Aid, or FASFA. This application is published by the Department of Education and is the same for almost every college, online or on campus. The only major difference between filling out this form at an online school and an on campus school is your filling the form out online instead of on paper. Also weather you are applying online or on campus it is totally free of charge.

The Federal Application will give lenders and the government an idea of the funding you are entitled to. Once you fill out the form and send it in, you should receive conformation within a few short days telling you which programs you are eligible for.

Just because you’re taking classes online, doesn’t mean it will cost you less. So you should go even as far as going to your local bank if you have to, and look for a low interest loan with a long payment plan. Getting your education doesn’t have to be as hard on your wallet as it is on your brain!

So obviously one of the first things you can get is a student loan. The government offers a multitude of loans for students, with the limit of the loan usually based on the school you are attending. If you need some information straight from the source follow this link: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

All student loans must be paid back, but the purpose of getting a loan is that you can pay it back at a slower pace. The government will determine the type of loan they give you by several different factors, such as your income and your dependants. Some students are even offered subsidized loans by the government, where the government pays the interest of the loan for you. So obviously it in imperative that you find the best loan for you!

The next step on your list is to apply for grants. Grants are free money from the government that you don’t have to pay back. So you need to apply for as many government grants as you can! The government offers grants to students who a in the lower level bracket of income. Usually to get a grant a student must maintain a minimum GPA in order to get the grant and to keep it through to the next semester. The minimum GPA varies from school to school, and varies sometimes because of income. But the average GPA to obtain and keep a grant is between 2.5-3.0 GPA. You can find extra information on grants at the link posted above.

But obviously there are some students who don’t qualify for government grants. Such as students in specific unapproved schools, and those who are not US citizens. These are the students who have to take the option of taking out a private loan from a bank. In order to get a loan from a bank you generally need good and well established credit and or a co-signer who does on the loan with you. Bank loans are generally higher in interest.

Finally, you need to try and get a scholarship. A scholarship is an award given for academic achievement. Like grants, scholarships do not have to be paid back. The only down fall is that scholarships are usually only give out by schools. So in order to get one you need to already enrolled in a school. But if you are it is necessary to know of all the requirements needed to get the scholarships you are eligible.

So apply for as much as you can in order to maximize your educational dollar. There are many programs out there for everyone. If you do the proper research into financial aid you will save money and have more time to study to earn your degree.
