How do you teach sight words to kids? Children learn sight words by practicing, repetition through repeat exposure. Because classroom time is rarely enough time to teach a child sight words at a level he/she will truly master his/her word lists, parents should take every opportunity to help their children practice at home and outside the classroom. Children should be taught how to recognize and spell these important words.
There are many sight word games and activities available to assist in teaching these important words. There are also many sight words list such as Dolch Word List and Fry Word List. Sight word activities and educational games such as flash cards, bingo and online educational games are great ways to help your child recognize and spell his/her words lists faster – and ultimately help your child develop into a more efficient and smoother reader.
Children do not learn sight words by sounding them out or through the use of pictures. So teaching these words with pictures is highly ineffective. Also, children who attempt to apply phonic analysis or decoding rules to these words will likely become very frustrated with reading – as sight words generally do not follow the phonic or coding rules taught in school. In order for a child to develop into an efficient and smooth reader he/she must gain mastery over his/her words lists and essentially have them memorized. Teaching these words to children through various games and activities will give your kids the repeat exposure he/she will need to master sight words.
